New/Used textbooks for trade/obo
I'm looking to get books for the upcoming Spring semester at Ohlone without breaking the bank... which their prices totally would. I could just look for the books I need online but last semester I paid shipping for a book that was shipped like 5 miles, that is simply ridiculous. So instead if anyone has the books I need or vice versa I'd like to set up a trade or something. Sound good? Here's what I'm looking for and what I've got:

Does anyone have books for:

Geography 104 (The World's Nations):
The World Today: de Blij, 4th Edition ($108 new/$81 used) <-- Ohlone Bookstore Price

Geology 101 (Introduction to Geology):
Lab.Man.In Phys.Geology- W/6Mods+3Gtools, Agi, 7th Edition ($80/$60)
Essentials of Geology (W/cd), Lutgens, 10th Edition ($97/$73)

English 151B (Fundamentals of Composition):
Handbook and Writer's Resource CD, Kirszner, 4th Edition ($32/$24)
Wordsmith: Guide To Paragraphs & Short Essays, Arlov, 4th Edition ($69/$52)
Gold-Bug & Other Tales, Poe ($2)
To Build A Fire and Other Favorite Stories, London ($3)

I have:
Hist 105 (History of California):
Major Problems in California History ($115/$88) quality decent, it got wet from the rain one day but its still a book.

Hist 107 (History of Film):
Talking About Films, Selinske ($20) from teacher, lol.. got wet from a water bottle, but yes... still has all its pages. Also I got this one for free so I am willing to give it away.

QuarkXPress 6 for Mac & Windows $30, amazon (quality: Brand New)
InDesign CS2 $23, amazon (quality: Brand New)
Graphic Design Solutions 3rd Edition $83, amazon, brand new
Design Basics 6th Edition $115 amazon, brand new
The Basics of Artistic Drawing $19.95 according to sticker on the back cover
Typography Workbook $40.00 from sticker

I'm sure I have a couple more Graphic Design books in my closet too. Let me know if you're interested in making a trade or buying one of my books etc. Thank you :)

I checked in the rules if this was okay, but if I read it wrong please tell me and I won't post this again.

Ouch!
http://www.yelp.com/biz/mad-fish-fremont

Man, I thought Little Madfish was kind of so-so, but it sounds like the new place needs to get their act together ASAP. I haven't been there, but I wonder what they're thinking. And are they REALLY going to charge $14 for a Philly roll after the grand opening period, when I can go to Yuki and get their exquisite house-made smoked salmon ones for less?

Fremont has an awfully high tolerance for what I think are a lot of really lousy, inauthentic, sloppy pseudo-Japanese restaurants, but it sounds like possibly there are some things that even Fremont won't put up with.

Ideally, the place will get their act together; I'd truly prefer to have yet another so-so fake Japanese place that Fremonters are disproportionately giddy over than to have more people lose their jobs. So for the sake of the people working there, I hope the owners and managers read the reviews and try to fix their problems.

(And I realize that they may indeed be having a 15% service charge included during the 50% off grand opening special period in order to compensate for people who don't base their tip on the original price instead of the discounted price, but you know what? Way to make an awful first impression! I have a feeling the servers might prefer to still have a job next month rather than have higher tips this month. But I could be wrong.)

By the way, in the same shopping center (Raley's/Paseo Padre), I noticed that Tuesday Morning is going to be moving BACK there. They used to be on the BART-facing side, and then they moved to Newark, and now they'll be back by where HPB Books used to be. Weird.

And a bit to the left, Learning Express (the cool toy store) is going out of business and will be having 20-70% off sales through January 29th.

Also noted recently on the @aroundfremont twitter account, Pasta Presto on Grimmer closed.

Shallow grave marked `baby' causes stir for Fremont police

A shallow grave with a makeshift headstone marked "baby" and adorned with a music box and a headband caused quite a stir for police Wednesday, prompting a four-hour investigation that resulted in the excavation of what turned out to be dog remains.

I'm going out to fight HIV/AIDS. You can help.
Hi there. In the event any new strangers happen to read this, my name is Rhett Aultman (lj: [info]roadriverrail ). I'm a 30 year-old computer engineer and amateur cyclist. This year, I am preparing for the biggest ride of my life, AIDS/LifeCycle a charity ride spanning 545 miles over 7 days. In a week of riding, I will travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles. This ride benefits a pair of charities, but I am specifically riding on behalf of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

I'd go on and on about AIDS/LifeCycle, but I happened to find this YouTube video that does a better job than I ever could.

There's almost no way for me to express how much an event like this means to me. It may be hard to understand, especially if you're reading this and were born in the age of modern antiviral drugs, but I (and my entire generation) grew up having to know that a new and lethal plague could take us at any time. AIDS has been one of the shaping forces of my lifetime, drawing lines among the American public with a strength similar to major historical events like the end of the Cold War. AIDS completely changed the way that adults could think about their relationships with one another. It made sex education a matter of survival and therefore helped my generation grow up too soon. It gave a medical excuse to marginalize GLBT members of society, reinvigorating homophobia to the point that its aftershocks are felt today. People with HIV are still frequently treated as pariahs.

And no, HIV/AIDS has not been cured. Mitigation treatments are not cures, and they're expensive, creating a massive financial burden for those struggling to survive with this terrible disease.

If I could wind up one of my legs and drop-kick AIDS from the universe, I would. Sadly, I don't have the power to do that. But, I can put my legs to some use.  I'm a distance cyclist, and my participation in a major charity ride can do a great deal in terms of raising money and awareness.

You can help me fight AIDS.

I can't think of a single person who thinks AIDS is "no big deal." Nobody likes AIDS, but I think everyone can admit that it's a problem we don't really feel we know how to fight. I know I've been in that camp for much of my life, and AIDS/LifeCycle is giving me an opportunity to kick myself in my inertia and use my body and my passion for cycling to do something truly good for other people.

And this is where you come in, if you'd like to join me in my effort.

Donations: I am trying to raise $5,000 in donations before the big ride. Your generosity can help me to reach this goal. By helping me achieve my fund raising goal, you're becoming part of a larger effort to help prevent the spread of HIV and to help maintain dignity of life for those who suffer from the disease. I will be going out on this massive ride for you, my kind sponsors. Your charitable gift is a reason for me to spend every day training, because I know that I'm representing others. You can find out more about how to donate to my cause here.

Spread the word: Regardless of whether or not you donate, there's something you can do that's quick, easy, and incredibly available to most of us. If you're reading this, you have a LiveJournal. You probably have a Twitter account, too. You likely are on Facebook. You might even have a blog (or multiple blogs). One of the biggest things you can do to help me is to bring other people on board. A simple blog post or Tweet, especially if you encourage others to repost as well, spreads my message far beyond my reach and encourages others to join in.

Aid and comfort: I'm not going to lie. The training isn't the easiest thing in the world. To reach my goals for weekly mileage, I've given up much of my free time to riding. On this earliest phase, I'm riding nearly 30 miles every day, and this is only going to go up. Anything to keep me going for the next six months is like mana from heaven to me. It could be as simple as an email or a tweet. Much like spreading the word, this costs nothing and is amazingly easy to do.

Thank you so much for reading all of this. I rarely feel comfortable asking for things from others, but this is a very important cause. I know no one of us is powerful enough to fight AIDS, but if you want to join me on my journey, I'll promise to do my best for you.

Thank you again.

Fanboy Supercuts, Obsessive Video Montages

This is hypnotic:

It's also pretty good if you play them both at the same time.

Annoyingly, most of these have been pulled already, e.g. "House: every 'lupus' reference": This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by NBC Universal.

Fuck you, NBC Universal. How do you imagine that nuking this video helps your bottom line? "Gosh, I was going to watch House, but now that I've seen all the lupus references at once, I guess I won't bother."

私の目覚ましは地震だよ!
Woken up by a 4.1 earthquake maybe 10 miles from here. I think that's the first time I've been woken up by one. But at 4.1, not such a big deal--just that we were pretty close to it. The land around it is mostly uninhabited, I think. The last quake was on the same fault (Calaveras) out toward Sunol, too, IIRC.

http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/nc71336726.htm

I'll fill out the Did You Feel It? later, after breakfast.

The fault that runs right through our town and alarms us is the Hayward fault--it's what, a block away from me? but the Calaveras is also quite close.

On well, nothing to see here, move along!

Sadly I will be out of town but...
All are invited to participate in the 9th Annual No Pants! Subway Ride. The event will take place from 2:30 - 3:00 PM on Sunday January 10.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION:

1) Willing to take pants off on subway
2) Able to keep a straight face about it
3) At least $5 for the BART/MUNI rides and some extra for bar/etc.
(or a fast past)

If you are unfamiliar with the No Pants Subway Ride, read the history here:
http://improveverywhere.com/missions/the-no-pants-subway-ride/

THE PLAN:

Pittsburg/Bay Point train, times below.

Go to the station of your choice, before the scheduled train arrives. If you can, arrive with no pants (if you are bringing pants for later, have them in a bag or otherwise concealed; if you need to, discreetly take your pants off in the station before getting on the train). Then get on the train when it arrives. Act casual. Don’t take pictures, if you can help it. Try not to notice the other pantsless people, unless someone points them out to you. If asked, pretend you have no idea why everyone else has no pants. See the improv everywhere page if you need ideas on why /you’re/ not wearing pants.

This is the new revised schedule; if you plan on boarding from the other stations that are suggested, PLEASE DO. The more spread out we are the better.

1:47 San Bruno
1:51 SSF
1:54 Colma
1:58 Daly City
2:01 Balboa Park -Last names that start with A-H
2:04 Glen Park
2:07 24th & mission - Last names that start with I-P
2:09 16th & mission
2:11 Civic Center - last names that start with Q-Z
2:13 Powell
2:14 Montgomery
2:16 Embarcadero - we all exit

The main stop everyone boarded on was @ 16th and mission but I’d like to have it more spread out this year so everyone isn’t getting on at the same stop. If some could disperse to 24th and mission that would be great. (the more spread out we are the better)

Remember that you might want to bring pants for later in case it does get cold. The forecast is a high of 58 so we are looking good so far.
I’ll update this more this week. Thanks and hope to see everyone in their best attire.

THESE INSTRUCTION ARE FOR EAST BAY ONLY DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE ON THE SF BAY SIDE
EAST BAYERS
You are very important too, so make sure you come. It would be great if you would arrive on this train or around 2:16 so the confusion of both trains in the station emptying out with pants-less passengers.

1:27 Concord
1:32 Pleasant Hill
1:35 Walnut Creek
1:39 Layafette
1:44 Orinda
1:50 Rockridge
1:55 McAuthur
1:58 19th & Oakland
1:59 12th & Oakland
2:03 West Oakland
2:11 Embarcadero< exit here
Our train will arrive a couple minutes later so just wait for us.

Well done, Kodak! The Goatses will continue until morale improves.

How to show everyone what's on your Kodak frame.

So much win:

  • If you know or guess the MAC address of any Kodak wireless digital picture frame, you can extract the images that are displaying on it.

  • You can also remotely reset the frame, meaning you can 0wnz0r it and change its image sources.

So Kodak has built an appliance for letting complete strangers (a) browse your family photos, and (b) beam shock porn directly into your living room! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

This all works because the appliances won't connect to (e.g.) Flickr directly, they only phone home to Kodak's server, which then proxies all of the requests. But at least they're using OAuth instead of making you type your Flickr password into Kodak's server. This is a little surprising, actually, given the tip-top job their security engineers did of designing the rest of the infrastructure of this product line.

I guess I ought to add a WebCollage source to generate random Kodak MAC addresses for use as an image source!

The Year of the Rock Star
Never one to miss a good zeitgeist, I am joining in with [info]nancyblue, [info]dixiemouse, [info]girlpurple, and others in declaring that 2010 is going to be Year of the Rock Star for me. It only seems fitting, since, to be frank, 2009 sucked and I want to make orphans of its children. Don't get me wrong...2009 also delivered me a very, very important thing. I'm now in Silicon Valley, where I've wanted to be, where [info]nancyblue is happy, and where work might have a little better stability. The circumstances under which it happened were horrible, though, and it really knocked me hard.

I mean, I did what Adama would do, and I rolled the hard six, and I won. And then, like Adama, I watched a bunch of other tragic shit happen. There was even a casualty in the family. I've sufficiently had it with everything in 2009 that I'm not even going to bother writing about my experiences back home over the holidays. I have a couple of things that are still mildly ongoing that I'll write about soon enough, but outside of that, I just want to get on with another year.

Obviously, my major rock star moment this year will be AIDS/LifeCycle. I kicked off Operation Running Up That Hill (ORUTH) today with my first lunchtime training ride. Added 12 miles with a 45 minute ride through Cupertino, Mountain View, and Sunnyvale. I hadn't exactly planned the route, and actually thought I had gotten lost at one point, so I'm not bothered by coming up a few miles short of the 15 mile quota. It was a pretty route, too. I'll be doing it again, for sure. Something tells me I'll be seeing a lot of Silicon Valley over the next six months.

I also started the fund raising process with a rather modest wall message on Facebook. I'll be starting on LiveJournal soon enough, and I need to quickly think up how I'm going door-to-door. Apparently, it's encouraged to offer sponsorship (i.e. jersey space in exchange for donations), and I think I might try to throw out a few letters to deep pockets and see what comes up that way, too.

I also fully intend to kick more ass at work. I have a better plan for being a show-off, something my boss explicitly asked me to be.

Honestly, a certain amount of emotional exhaustion just kept me quiet and humble last year, and I need to fix that.

Outside of that, though, I'm not 100% sure what bringing out my rock star is. I guess I need to fix that quickly
